Remove the Background from a Signature (Transparent PNG)
Insert a scanned signature into a document and it usually arrives sitting in an obvious white rectangle, covering whatever it overlaps. The fix is transparency: this tool examines every pixel and makes the light ones fully transparent while keeping the dark ink solid, returning a PNG you can drop onto any background cleanly. The threshold is tuned for dark ink on white or near-white paper, which is the normal case for a scan or a phone photo of a signed sheet. If the result is not what you expected
Parts of my signature disappeared
Anything lighter than roughly 78% brightness is treated as background, so pale ink, pencil, and the thin tapered ends of strokes can be removed along with the paper. Sign with a black or dark blue pen with a reasonably thick nib, and scan or photograph in bright, even light — a darker original gives the threshold a clear margin to work with.
The background is still there, or came out patchy
This usually means the paper was not light enough in the photo — a shadow across the sheet, a dim room, or coloured paper all push background pixels below the cutoff so they are kept. Re-photograph the signature on plain white paper in good light, with the camera straight above it rather than at an angle.
There are grey specks or a faint outline around the strokes
Pixels sitting near the threshold produce a fringe, more common with JPEG photos than with scans because compression softens edges. Scanning instead of photographing gives noticeably cleaner results, as does making sure the signature fills a good portion of the frame.
The signature is the wrong size for my document
Resize it after removing the background, using Resize Signature for Document — and enter only one dimension there, so the transparency is not padded with white.
