Fix Blurry Text in Images

When you photograph a printed page with a phone, the text usually comes out soft rather than truly out of focus — the letters are all there, just low in contrast and slightly smeared. This tool targets exactly that: it first stretches the image to a full tonal range so faded paper becomes properly white and grey ink becomes properly dark, then applies an unsharp mask that tightens the edges of each letterform. On a document photo that is merely soft, the improvement in readability is usually obvious. On a genuinely out-of-focus shot it will not be, because sharpening can only strengthen detail that was captured — it cannot reconstruct strokes the lens never resolved.

How it works

  1. Upload your image with blurry or hard-to-read text.

  2. Sharpening filters and local contrast enhancement are applied to emphasize text edges.

  3. Download the improved image — text should appear clearer and more defined.

Why use this tool

  • Works directly in your browser — no software to install.

  • Processes your file privately — images are not stored.

  • Free and instant — no account required.

  • Useful for phone photos of documents, printed contracts, or handwritten notes.

If the result is not what you expected

The text is still unreadable

There is a hard limit on what sharpening can do: if the original photo did not capture the letter shapes, no amount of edge enhancement will invent them. Re-photographing usually beats any processing — rest the phone on something solid, tap the screen on the text to force focus there, and get even light on the page. Two seconds of care at capture time is worth more than any filter.

The image got noisier or grainier

Sharpening amplifies everything, including sensor noise from a dim room and JPEG artifacts from a heavily compressed source. If the background became speckled, use Clean Up Scanned Document instead — it removes noise before boosting contrast, which is the right order for a noisy original.

The page has dark shadows across one side

This tool applies a single global contrast adjustment, so it cannot brighten one corner and leave another alone. For uneven lighting — a hand shadow, a lamp on one side — Clean Up Scanned Document handles it properly, because it adapts contrast region by region across the page.

I need the text as selectable, editable text

This produces a clearer image, not text you can copy. That conversion is OCR (optical character recognition), which is a different operation — Google Drive will do it free if you upload the image and open it with Google Docs. Running it through this tool first often improves the OCR result.
