Sharpen a Scanned Document
Flatbed scanners and office copiers have a characteristic failure: the page is evenly lit and clean, but every letter has slightly fuzzy edges, as though seen through tracing paper. That is usually the scan resolution or the copier's own compression, and it is precisely what edge enhancement fixes. This tool normalises the tonal range and applies an unsharp mask, tightening letterforms and line art without altering the content. It suits scans that are soft but otherwise tidy — if yours has speckles, dust marks, or a grey cast, clean it up first, because sharpening a noisy scan makes the noise sharper too.

If the result is not what you expected
The scan got speckled or the background went blotchy
You sharpened a noisy scan — the noise gets enhanced along with the text. Run Clean Up Scanned Document on the original instead. It removes speckles and normalises the background first, which is the correct order of operations for a dirty scan.
Letters now have visible halos or look over-processed
Unsharp masking works by exaggerating the contrast right at each edge, which is visible as a light rim if the scan was already fairly sharp. If the original was acceptable, it may simply not need this tool — sharpening an already-crisp scan makes it worse, not better.

Scan text documents at 300 DPI (600 for small print or anything you plan to OCR), choose greyscale rather than colour for plain text, and turn off any "auto enhance" the scanner software applies by default — those settings frequently soften text more than they help.
